Scam Alert - Bank Fees

14 September 10

Members should be aware of a current telephone scam regarding overcharged bank fees.

The scammers claim to be from a government agency such as the Office of Fair Trading or they may claim to be from Police & Nurses.

The reason for the call is they claim you have been overcharged fees and need your bank account or credit card details so they can reclaim the money on your behalf. Or they may request money to be sent to them as an upfront payment to process the refund.

They may even give you the number of a call centre for you to contact, however this call centre is part of the scam.

We recommend our members to exercise caution if they are contacted by someone offering cash, refunds or other forms of financial benefit.

If you receive a call allegedly from Office of Fair Trading, you can check its authenticity by contacting 13 32 20.

If you recieve a call claiming to be from Police & Nurses, you can check its authenticity by contacting 13 25 77.

Here are some tips to protect your information:

  • Do not give out your personal, credit card, bank account or online account details over the phone unless you have made the call and know that the phone number came from a trusted source.
  • If you do receive an unsolicited call from us or another organisation asking for your bank details, do not provide personal information immediately, instead ask for a name and a contact number. Verify the call came from a trusted source before calling back.
