The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) commenced operation in 1999 following recognition by the Federal Government of a need to establish a stronger regulatory regime in Australian financial services. As a prudential regulator, APRA sets standards for the prudent management of financial institutions in Australia, to ensure adequate financial and managerial capability.
Police & Nurses, like all Australian banks and credit unions, is categorised and licensed by APRA as an Authorised Deposit Taking Institution (ADI), and as such is subject to the same prudential standards, regulations and supervision as any of the major Australian banks (Prudential Standard APS330 Disclosure).
One of the key prudential standards is Capital Adequacy. As at 30 June 2011, Police & Nurses achieved a Capital Adequacy Ratio of 14.96%, which is well in excess of the 8% minimum requirement for banks, building societies and credit societies in Australia.
As are all ADI's, Police & Nurses is subject to regular inspections by government agencies, including APRA, ASIC, the Reserve Bank of Australia, AUSTRAC and the ACCC, and must abide by the Uniform Consumer Credit Code and the Electronic Funds Transfer code.
Police & Nurses subscribes to and is compliant with the Mutual Banking Code of Practice. This code has been set down by Abacus, the peak industry body for Australian mutual building societies and credit unions. For more information please view our Mututal Banking Code of Practice page.
The Financial Services Reform Act states that any financial services business must meet the requirements set out in the legislation to be licensed. Police & Nurses' Australian Financial Services License (AFSL 240701) was granted with a commencement date of 19 January 2004.
